This Week on Sound Medicine

INDIANAPOLIS — This weekend, June 6 and 7, Sound Medicine host Barbara Lewis and her guests will discuss peanut allergies in children, impulsivity and alcoholism and electronic medical record security.

Wesley Burks, M.D., chief of pediatric allergy and immunology at Duke University Medical Center, will discuss his research into finding a way to reduce the number of peanut allergies in children. Ultimately, he hopes his research leads to a cure.

Nick Grahame, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, will explain his research on impulsivity and alcoholism which focuses on whether alcoholism causes impulsivity or if impulsivity causes alcoholism.

Sound Medicine ethicist Eric Meslin, Ph.D., and Ken Goodman, Ph.D., co-director of the ethics program at the University of Miami, will discuss the bioethical challenges of ensuring electronic medical records are kept secure.

In this week’s Sound Medicine “Checkup,” Jeremy Shere, Ph.D., will explore if the brain is better at deciphering pictures or words.
