This Week on Sound Medicine
INDIANAPOLIS — This weekend, July 18 and 19, Sound Medicine host Barbara Lewis and her guests will discuss FDA oversight over tobacco products, new heart tissue growth and evidence-based medicine.
Sound Medicine reporter Shia Levitt will explain the new legislation that authorizes the Food and Drug Administration to oversee how tobacco companies advertise, market and manufacture their products.
Continuing the discussion will be Stephen Jay, M.D., professor of medicine and former chairman of the Department of Public Health at the IU School of Medicine, who will explain the history of tobacco policy and legislation prior to the new law and how the law may affect how tobacco is marketed and sold.
Marc Gerdisch, M.D., director of cardiothoracic surgery at St. Francis Heart Center in Indianapolis, will explain how he uses a bio-material called extra-cellular matrix to help patients regenerate heart tissue.
David Newman M.D., director of clinical research at the Department of Medicine at Columbia University, will discuss his new book, Hippocrates Shadow: Secrets from the House of Medicine, in which he argues in favor of evidence-based medicine over traditional practice.
Also this week, Sound Medicine will air a new installment of “Grace Notes,” a series of first-person essays about end-of-life issues written and read by Larry Cripe, M.D., associate professor of medicine and an oncologist at the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center.
In this week’s Sound Medicine “Checkup,” Jeremy Shere, Ph.D., will discuss whether kids are getting enough calcium.
